Editor Speaks

The second issue of this year’s AIWCF Bulletin 2022 is in your hands.

Dr. Chatterjee has kindly agreed to be the guest Editor of this edition since I am indisposed for approx. two months (since mid-August) on an urgent assignment.

Sadly, we lost our veteran chess player Cdr. Ganapathi recently at the age of 93. He was an active CC player till his last days. We had published an Auto-chess-o-graphy on him in 2020, 2nd edition. AIWCF family expresses its heartfelt condolences to Cdr. Ganapathi’s family. Read the obituary here.

CCM Mohan Turaga has provided the Games section with his trademark style of providing GM level games with similar opening lines to the CC games played.

IM Om Prakash Mohanty has come up with another article posing some challenging positions which seem to be beyond the domain of even powerful engines. He has also provided analysis of his own defeat to Talibov in 18th Afro-Asia championship final.

Nagesh has provided an article on the Candidates 2022 tournament which was won convincingly by Ian Nepomniachtchi, followed by world number 2, Ding Liren. With the momentous decision of Magnus Carlsen not to defend his title, the World championship match will now be played between Nepomniachtchi and Ding next year.

The Editor’s Chess Tidbits covers the 50th anniversary of the historic Fischer-Spassky match. We lost two of the greatest grandmasters of that era in recent times- GM Averbakh and GM Kavalek. Chennai Chess Olympiad 2022 was a resounding success for the organisers. The young Uzbekistan team and Muzychuk sisters-led Ukraine team were the winners in Open and Women’s Olympiad. The young India 2 squad outperformed the India 1 squad in the Open and got third place, while the strong women’s team also got bronze. The performances of David Howell, Gukesh, Vakhidov, Arjun Erigaisi and Praggnanandha in Open were outstanding and stood out. Among women, Oliwia Kiolbasa was the find of the tournament; followed by timeless wonder, 59 year old Pia Cramling.

GM Abhijit Gupta who joined AIWCF this year has completed the requirements for ICCF IM title. He joins the ranks of Santhosh Paul, Om Prakash and Pavan Kumar. The number of norm holders has been increasing steadily every year. Pavan Kumar has made an SIM norm while Devangshu Datta, Alok Saxena, Lalit Kapoor and Ajith Jose have made IM norms. Wishing them all the best to achieve their titles. Dr Chatterjee became CCM, after completing his 3rdCCM norm.

AIWCF 1519 championship (Engine allowed) is in the crucial stage for deciding the top-3 positions. The next AIWCF 1520 championship (Engine allowed) will commence soon. Engine Forbidden AIWCF C003 championship is in progress since July 2022.

As usual, looking forward to your comments, corrections or suggestions for improvement on AIWCF Whatsapp group or by Email.

Sincerely Yours,
Anil Anand
