Editor's Note

The game Pillsbury-Lasker was one of Lasker’s greatest creative masterpieces in his lifelong career!

Till this game, Pillsbury led the tournament among the four world class players, Pillsbury, Lasker, Steinitz and Chigorin. Pillsbury is believed to have contracted syphilis prior to the start of this event. Although he was in the lead after the first half of the tournament (6.5/9), he was affected by severe headaches and scored very low (1.5/9) in the second half, ultimately finishing third (Lasker 11.5/18, Steinitz 9.5/18, Pillsbury 8/18, Chigorin 7/18). Garry Kasparov has suggested that had he won this encounter, he could well have won the tournament and forced a world championship match against Lasker.

However, Caissa had other plans. Poor mental and physical health, prevented Pillsbury from realizing his full potential throughout the rest of his life. He succumbed to the illness in 1906.
