SSL CERTIFICATE AND MOVE TO HTTPS

On 7th May 2024 we purchased an SSL Certificate from our GoDaddy provider and http://www.aiwcf.org became https://www.aiwcf.org. Although members were not facing any issue with http, but prospective new members filling the Membership Form, had to bypass the warning, hence we decided to take up the extra cost for an SSL Certificate.

What does HTTPS mean? In recent times cyber attacks have become common. With http, a hacker can intercept the data and get access to AIWCF passwords and moves. In https the data transmitted is encrypted. This is not really a concern because a hacker is unlikely to spend his time and effort to snoop into chess moves. You can compare it to the old days of postcard chess. The postcard is open and anyone (like the postman) can see your moves. However, we never bothered. Nowadays SSL certificate is considered a “must” so we went through with it.

YOUR-MOVE MOBILE APP STOPS WORKING

The mobile phone app Your Move has been popular with some of our players both for AIWCF and ICCF. It allows you to send your move using a simple mobile app instead of having to connect over web-browser. Most players prefer the large screen of a laptop and they use a laptop for analysis in Engine Allowed games. However, there is a sizeable section of users, especially players playing Engine Forbidden CC, who find it more convenient to send their moves from a mobile phone. The web-browser on the mobile phone can be used, but its interface is not very friendly on a small screen.

The app Your-Move was created and maintained by Asim Pereira who is a member of both AIWCF and ICCF. But since the past two years he has stopped support of this app. It is no longer available for download from Play Store. Those who already installed the app can no longer use it for for AIWCF after our shift to https.

Note that other XFCC programs like SCID-vs-PC and Aquarium continue to work. All you have to do is enter https://www.aiwcf.org/xfcc.php instead of http://www.aiwcf.org/xfcc.php in the app settings).

For a full explanation about using XFCC please refer to the user guide.

DEDICATED MOBILE INTERFACE

To provide an alternative to Your-Move for our members, we quickly created a small web application. By placing a shortcut to https://aiwcf.org/m.php on the home screen of your mobile phone, you can get the same functionality as Your-Move allowing you to send your moves easily. As explained in the guide:
This is a customised web application, designed to be light weight. It is run through the browser of your phone. The link is https://www.aiwcf.org/m.php.

You can create a shortcut for it on your phone's home screen for easy access.

Creating a short cut on your mobile phone home screen:
Open Chrome. Navigate to https://www.aiwcf.org/m.php. Tap the menu icon (3 dots in upper right-hand corner) and tap Add to home screen as shown below.

Joining Tournaments

Member Amit Kumar Sharma, pointed out that there was no way to take a look at the other players already registered before enrolling for an event. Accordingly we added another column "Show Players" in the interface for joining tournamnents. The picture alongside is for Engine Allowed Tournaments, and for Engine Forbidden Tournaments it is similar.
