AIWCF STARTS CHESS 960
Chess960, also known as Fischer Random Chess, is a chess variant that randomizes the starting position of the pieces on the back rank. It was introduced by former world chess champion Bobby Fischer in 1996 to reduce the emphasis on opening preparation and to encourage creativity in play. Chess960 uses the same board and pieces as classical chess, but the starting position of the pieces on the players' home ranks is randomized, following certain rules. The random setup makes gaining an advantage through the memorization of openings unfeasible. Players instead must rely on their skill and creativity.
Chess 960, unlike other chess 'variants' has found its way into mainstream chess play. It is recognized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). With the backing of German entrepreneur Jan Henric Buettner and support from Magnus Carlsen, the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour was launched as a massive professional tournament series. High prize pools, corporate sponsors, and millions of views have significantly elevated Chess960 as a top-tier spectator sport. FIDE officially sanctions the World Fischer Random Chess Championships. The legacy of the tournament—featuring past champions like Wesley So (2019) and Hikaru Nakamura (2022), alongside Magnus Carlsen reclaiming supremacy in 2026—keeps the variant constantly in the spotlight.
ICCF began organizing Chess960 events starting in 2011. In this scenario AIWCF was also thinking about starting Correspondence Chess960. On 1st September 2026 we launched AIWCF Correspondence Chess960 with Normal, Rapid and Blitz time controls with both Engine Allowed and Engine Forbidden sections.
