AIWCF Webserver Update

BUG IN CONDITIONAL MOVES

On 28th December 2023 while everyone was wishing Happy Birthday to the Bulletin Editor, a quiet bug suddenly made its appearance on the AIWCF Server. The server software has been stable for over 10 years, with no major revisions (only enhancements) so to see a bug after so long seemed quite unreal. Om Prakash wrote, “Sir I was not able to add queen side castling in conditional moves”. The game was Om Prakash – Yusley Cardenas T.No. 4754. On looking closely, it became clear that there was a bug in the conditional move JavaScript code that remained unnoticed for over 12 years. It was a subtle bug arising under very rare circumstances. I am happy to report that the bug was diagnosed and corrected the very next day.

PRIZE WINNERS IN CROSS TABLES

Anil Anand has repeatedly pointed out that prize winners are not correctly reported in the Championship cross tables when there are tie-breaks. We have now corrected this.

ENGINE FORBIDDEN THEMATICS

Up to now Thematic Tournaments have always been in the Engine Allowed category. There has been a longstanding request to start Engine Forbidden Thematic Tournaments, however this required creating the necessary infrastructure in software. We have now completed this task and happy to report that AIWCF’s very first Engine Forbidden Thematic Tournament, M157 got underway (see Management Matters for details).

ELO IN PGN FILES

While preparing games for the current Bulletin, Games Editor, Mohan Turaga pointed out that PGN files downloaded from the AIWCF site did not include the fields WhiteElo and BlackElo. We have now added these field when you download from Cross Tables or from Games Download. The numbers correspond to AIWCF ratings lists as on the date of start of the tournament. The AIWCF Rating system was revamped in September 2009. The Elo fields are not shown for games older than this.

SERVER EMAILS

There are Email delivery problems. Our service provider has introduced restrictions in the time between emails and the email volume. We send automated email notifications for moves (unless disabled by a user), reminders and announcements. We are trying to cope with the email volume but there are instances when an email gets blocked. Another problem is that, emails to some address end up in the spam folder. All members are requested to check their Spam folder and mark emails from no_reply@aiwcf.org as Not-Spam so that future emails will be delivered in the Inbox.
