Editor Speaks

We present herewith the first issue of AIWCF Bulletin 2022.

The world is still under the cloud of the Corona virus (Covid-19) pandemic which has a more transmissible but probably less virulent variant Omicron, first reported in South Africa on Nov 25, 2021. The pandemic continues to affect the whole world which was still recovering from the after-effects of the highly fatal Delta variant.

Games Editor CCM Mohan Turaga has once again done an exemplary job of annotating several interesting games. Himself a top-10 AIWCF player, he has provided GM-level examples of play for the benefit of our readers.

This edition of the Bulletin has IM Om Prakash Mohanty providing some more engine-defying Awesome positions for readers to solve.

The Editor has captured the essence of the first six exciting games of the World Chess Championship match between Magnus Carlsen and Nepomniachtchi in Chess Tidbits. The remaining games were full of mistakes and not of world championship standard. Chess Tidbits covers other interesting events of 2021.

Yuri Averbakh completed 100 years, becoming the oldest living GM, a personal milestone for a chess Titan.

The 1518 Engine-allowed Chess Championship is in the final stages. Tanmay Srinath with 9.5/14 is still the front runner, followed by Aniruddha Dutta Gupta with 9/14 and former champion Om Prakash Mohanty and Ajith Jose with 8.5/13.

The second CC02 Engine-forbidden Chess Championship was won by Dr. Chatterjee with 13/14, closely followed by Anil Anand with 12.5/14. The 3rd position was shared jointly by Anuj Gupta and Dr. K. Prabhakar. H P Chavan drew his crucial game versus Anil Anand. However, he lost by time forfeit to Dr. Chatterjee, Dr. K. Prabhakar and tail-ender B.P.Ray. Congrats to the deserving winners!

The 1519 Engine-allowed Chess Championship is in the early stages with Om Prakash Mohanty, newcomer Arnab Sengupta and Rakesh Agrawal sharing the lead with 5.5 points.

Congrats to Rabirashmi Roy who has achieved his CCM title. He joins the rank of the growing list of our AIWCF masters. Dr. Chatterjee and Aniruddha Dutta Gupta have both achieved two CCM norms each and close to their titles.

Lalit Kapoor has made AIWCF proud by securing 1st place in National Arbiter exam conducted by AICF.

New Thematic tournaments (4710, 4711 and 4712) have been started on King’s Indian defence theme. Several top AIWCF players such as OTB GM Sethuraman, Pavan Kumar, Om Prakash, Gautam De, Mohan Turaga, Tanmay Srinath, Dr. Chatterjee, Alok Saxena, etc. are participating.

Another new 4-player tournament (4725) featuring Om Prakash, Tanmay Srinath, Arnab Sengupta and Rakesh Agrawal is underway.

As usual, looking forward to your comments and suggestions for improvement of the Bulletin on the AIWCF Whatsapp group or by Email.
